Waterbirth for Plus Size Mamas β Everything You Need to Know
One of the most common questions we receive from expecting mamas is some version of this: "I'm plus size. Can I still have a waterbirth?"
The answer is yes. Absolutely, unequivocally yes.
Waterbirth is not reserved for a particular body type. It is not a birth choice that belongs only to small-framed women or those who fit a certain idea of what a laboring person looks like. Waterbirth is for every body β and the warm, buoyant, supportive environment of a birth pool can be especially beneficial for plus size mamas.
We've been supplying birth pools to families across the United States for over a decade. We've seen waterbirths happen beautifully across every body type imaginable. And we want every plus size mama reading this to know β you belong in that pool.
THE BENEFITS OF WATERBIRTH ARE MAGNIFIED FOR PLUS SIZE MAMAS
Here's something that might surprise you. Many of the benefits of waterbirth β the things that make it such a powerful birth choice β are particularly meaningful for plus size mamas.
Buoyancy Changes Everything
The buoyancy of warm water reduces the feeling of weight and pressure on your body during labor. For plus size mamas this can be especially significant. The weight of your body β weight that can make movement and position changes challenging during land labor β is dramatically reduced in the water. Many plus size mamas describe getting into the birth pool as the first time during labor that they felt truly free and unburdened.
This freedom of movement matters enormously during labor. Being able to shift positions, move instinctively, and find what feels right for your body without the limitation of your weight working against you is a genuine game changer.
Pain Relief That Works for Every Body
Warm water immersion is a powerful natural analgesic β and its pain-relieving effects are not diminished by body size. The warmth, the pressure reduction, the calming of the nervous system β all of these work just as effectively for plus size mamas as for anyone else.
Many plus size mamas who planned to request an epidural find that once they're in the birth pool they no longer feel the need for one. The water does what it does β regardless of the body it's supporting.
Reduced Pressure on Joints and Soft Tissue
Labor is physically demanding for every body. For plus size mamas, the additional weight carried during pregnancy can put significant pressure on joints, back, and pelvic floor throughout labor. The water reduces this pressure dramatically β giving your body the chance to labor with less strain and more freedom.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT BIRTH POOL
This is where size does matter β not in whether you can have a waterbirth, but in making sure you choose the right pool for your body and your comfort.
Size and Depth
The most important factor for plus size mamas is choosing a pool that is large enough to move freely and deep enough to keep your bump fully submerged when seated. You want to be able to change positions, lean forward, sit upright, or go on all fours without feeling cramped or restricted.
Our Birth Pool in a Box Eco Personal Regular or Pro Regular β our largest inflatable model β is the most popular choice for plus size mamas. It provides generous interior space and excellent depth, giving you the room you need to labor comfortably and freely.
Weight Capacity
A proper birth pool is designed to hold significant weight β the water alone weighs hundreds of pounds, plus the weight of the laboring person. Our Birth Pool in a Box pools are built to medical-grade standards with this in mind. They are not consumer paddling pools β they are engineered for the demands of labor and birth.
Stability
You want a pool that is stable and doesn't flex excessively when you lean against the sides or change positions. Our pools have multiple air chambers that provide structural stability throughout labor, so you can move with confidence.
TALKING TO YOUR MIDWIFE
If you're plus size and interested in waterbirth the most important conversation you can have is with your care provider. Here's what to discuss:
Candidacy
Waterbirth candidacy is based on the risk level of your pregnancy β not your body size. A low-risk plus size pregnancy is just as appropriate a candidate for waterbirth as a low-risk pregnancy at any other size. Your midwife will assess your individual situation and help you understand whether waterbirth is appropriate for you.
Monitoring
Your midwife will need to monitor baby's heart rate throughout labor. Waterproof Doppler equipment makes this possible in the pool. Make sure your care provider is equipped and experienced with monitoring in water β this is standard practice for experienced waterbirth midwives.
Getting In and Out
Discuss with your midwife how you'll get in and out of the pool safely β especially later in labor when movements may be more difficult. Having a stable step stool or platform beside the pool and a strong support person ready to assist is recommended for all laboring people but is worth planning carefully if mobility is a consideration.
Your Midwife's Experience
Ask your midwife specifically about their experience supporting plus size mamas in waterbirth. An experienced waterbirth midwife will have supported a range of body types and will be able to give you specific, personalized guidance.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR PLUS SIZE MAMAS PLANNING A WATERBIRTH
Order the Largest Pool Available
Don't compromise on pool size. The Birth Pool in a Box Eco Pro gives you the most interior space and the most freedom of movement. For plus size mamas specifically, we always recommend the largest pool in our range.
Consider Your Floor
A filled birth pool is extremely heavy β typically over 1,000 pounds when you account for the water alone. When you add your own weight this increases further. Ground floor rooms are strongly recommended for all waterbirths β this is especially worth prioritizing for plus size mamas.Β Typically, there should be no issue.Β
Practice Getting In and Out
During your practice setup run β which we recommend doing at 34-36 weeks β practice getting in and out of the pool. This is the time to identify whether you need a step, a grab handle, or additional support. Finding this out at 36 weeks gives you time to sort it out. Finding it out during labor does not.
Have Plenty of Support
Make sure your birth team includes at least one strong support person whose role includes physically supporting you if needed β getting in and out of the pool, changing positions, or simply providing a steady hand. Your midwife will be focused on clinical care β having dedicated physical support for you is important.
Wear What Feels Right
Some plus size mamas feel more comfortable in a supportive swimsuit or bikini top during labor in the pool. Others prefer nothing at all. There is no right answer β wear what makes you feel most comfortable and confident. Your birth space is yours and there is no judgment.
Water Temperature
The recommended water temperature for waterbirth is 95-100Β°F (35-37Β°C). This applies to all laboring people regardless of body size. Monitor temperature regularly with a proper thermometer throughout labor.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE POOL
Many plus size mamas are concerned about whether the pool will feel comfortable or whether they'll fit easily. Here's what the experience is usually like:
Getting in for the first time is often described as an immediate relief β the water takes the weight, the warmth relaxes everything, and the sense of freedom is immediate. The pool is spacious enough to move, shift, lean, and change positions throughout labor.
Your midwife will be able to reach you, monitor baby, and support you through the birth without difficulty. The sides of the pool provide a comfortable surface to lean against. The handles built into our pools give you something to hold during contractions.
Most plus size mamas who choose waterbirth describe it as one of the best decisions they made for their birth β the water made them feel free, supported, and capable in a way they hadn't expected.
YOU DESERVE THE BIRTH YOU WANT
If you've been told β by a healthcare provider, by the internet, by anyone β that waterbirth isn't for you because of your size, we want to say this clearly: that is not necessarily true.
Body size alone is not a contraindication for waterbirth. What matters is the risk level of your pregnancy, the experience of your care provider, and the right equipment for your body and your birth.
You deserve access to every birth option available to you. You deserve a care provider who sees you as a whole person and supports your choices. You deserve a birth pool that fits your body and a birth experience that feels empowered, peaceful, and completely yours.
We are here to help make that happen.
